Caruaru is the second largest Medical Center in Pernambuco, behind only the state capital. A career in the Health sector offers different possibilities for professional activity in Caruaru and the region. At Centro Universitário Tabosa de Almeida (Asces-Unita), students can choose between nine degrees directly linked to the sector: Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Biomedicine, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Psychology and Physical Education.
In the Medicine course, the institution prepares students for the challenges of contemporary medical practice through humanized, solid training aligned with regional needs. With practical insertion from the first years in the main health services in the Agreste and support from a high-tech laboratory structure, the degree in Medicine at Asces-Unita trains professionals to work in humanized care, precise diagnosis, primary care, emergencies and health care management.
According to Paulo Gustavo, coordinator of the Medicine course at Asces-Unita, the market allows professionals to follow paths that range from assistance to management, research and entrepreneurship. "We have a huge range. You can work in the hospital sector, in clinics, private practices, in the diagnostic area, in the laboratory, in biotechnology and also in management", he explains.

Among the areas that have been gaining ground, he mentions Biomedicine, especially molecular and genetic diagnoses and aesthetics. In Physiotherapy, there are possibilities in hospitals, ICUs, neurological recovery and sport. Nutrition has opportunities in the clinical, preventive and sports areas. Nursing and Dentistry also have different specialties and areas of activity.
In Nursing, the size of the market also appears in the data from the Nursing Profile in Brazil survey, carried out by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), on the initiative of the Federal Nursing Council (Cofen). According to the survey, around 1.7 million of the 3.5 million health workers in the country work in nursing.
Graduated in Nursing from Asces-Unita, Gabriel Gomes, aged 44, built a career that included assistance, management and teaching. After graduating, he was nursing coordinator at a hospital in Brejo da Madre de Deus and worked at the Hospital Regional do Agreste, including coordinating the ICU. Currently, he works as a consultant on assistance processes at the State Department of Health of Pernambuco.
"Health, and particularly Nursing, ended up becoming much more than a professional choice. It became a space for personal fulfillment, continuous learning and, above all, the possibility of transforming lives", says Gabriel.

For him, graduating from Asces-Unita was important for building his career. Gabriel highlights training based on knowledge, skills and attitudes and participation in academic activities. “I usually say that we received a real ‘TEA’ of technical, scientific and humanistic training”, he says.
The proximity to professional reality is one of the differences highlighted by Paulo Gustavo. The institution maintains agreements with hospitals, polyclinics, basic health units and the municipality's Health Department, in addition to developing extension projects and activities in teaching clinics.
“This allows us to have this insertion effectively and helps these students to better integrate into the job market later on”, says the coordinator.
Training also includes laboratories, teaching clinics, research, innovation, postgraduate studies and residencies. For Paulo Gustavo, the structure adds to the experience of the institution, which has been operating for 67 years, and the training of the teaching staff, made up mostly of masters and doctors.

For anyone thinking about starting a career in the area, Gabriel has some advice: "The Health sector is broad and offers many opportunities. Do your best, allow yourself to learn, get involved, dedicate yourself to what you have chosen and continually invest in your training."
