Assam Congress ends political alliance with Raijor Dal

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has ended its political alliance with Raijor Dal. This decision follows alleged repeated violations of coalition ethics and conduct by Raijor Dal. The Congress cited malicious propaganda and character assassination against its party leaders. This move comes after public criticism of Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi's remarks. The alliance termination will not affect the Congress's commitment to public issues.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Thursday formally ended all political alliance ties with Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal, citing repeated violations of alliance ethics and conduct.

The decision, effective immediately, was taken at the direction of APCC president and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi. APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Baruah issued a circular formally announcing the termination of the alliance.

The Congress said it had entered into an electoral alliance with Raijor Dal and several regional and pan-India Left parties ahead of the previous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, with the aim of presenting a united opposition front against communal forces.

However, it alleged that the Raijor Dal leadership had, for much of the alliance period, engaged in what it called malicious propaganda and character assassination against the Congress, in violation of coalition norms and decorum.

The Congress also accused Raijor Dal leaders of making "baseless, unwarranted and derogatory remarks" against leaders of other parties within the opposition alliance on multiple occasions, saying such conduct had repeatedly undermined the fundamental ethics of the coalition.

"In light of such conduct," the party said, it was no longer viable to sustain political ties with Raijor Dal.

The Congress said the end of its alliance with Raijor Dal would not affect its commitment to raising public issues or holding the BJP government accountable for what it described as anti-people actions, unjust policies and misgovernance.

The move comes days after the APCC publicly criticised remarks made by Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi against the Congress and warned him against functioning as a "government agent".

At a joint press conference on Sunday, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur and APCC Media & Communication Department chairman Bedabrat Bora criticised Gogoi over what they described as repeated violations of alliance principles.

Bora said Congress leaders, including APCC president Gaurav Gogoi and former Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, had been working to provide flood relief and rehabilitate flood-affected families.

He accused Akhil Gogoi of abandoning coalition ethics and making reckless and irresponsible statements, saying the Congress believed in genuine public service rather than "cheap PR stunts".

Bora also claimed that Gogoi had won the Sibsagar Assembly seat with the active support and political "oxygen" provided by the Congress, and that without the party's backing he would not have won a single seat.

The latest development follows the May 2026 Assam Assembly elections, in which the BJP won 82 of the state's 126 seats and the Congress secured 19. The Bodoland Peoples Front and Asom Gana Parishad won 10 seats each, while the All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal secured two seats each. The All India Trinamool Congress won one seat.
