Augusto Cury had a brief relationship with Marina Silva in 2009, but kept his distance from party politics until 2026

Before entering the 2026 presidential race, psychiatrist and writer Augusto Cury (Avante) built a public career marked more by self-help than by party politics.

There is, however, one exception: in 2009, he approached Marina Silva, in a move that placed him within the presidential project of the then Green Party senator.

Marina had just left the PT after almost three decades of activism and was preparing to run for President in 2010 for the PV.

Marina said she was a faithful reader of Cury, who became one of her advisors, according to a Folha report at the time.

Marina, recently left the Ministry of the Environment after a series of crises with Lula, had even invited him to join the PV. Cury accepted and said that he intended to collaborate in the development of the government program, especially in the area of ​​education.

At the time, he advocated that all secondary education be vocational and that distance universities should reach cities with more than 10 thousand inhabitants. It also said that the best position for chairs in class was in a "u" shape.

Cury justified his debut on the political scene with a catchphrase he liked to repeat: "Soon we will stage the last act of our existence on the small stage of a tomb."

Marina finished that election in third place, with 19.3% of the votes. In 2022, he made peace with Lula and became PT's Minister of the Environment. Today, the Rede-SP deputy is running for the Senate with the support of the PT.

After that experience, Cury once again remained distant from party politics. There is no public record that he declared support for Lula, Jair Bolsonaro or any other candidate in the following elections. In 2026, when asked about his vote, he stated that he was out of the country at the time of the election.

His party, Avante, endorsed Lula in 2022. Cury only joined the party in 2026 and, during the campaign, he already criticized the president.

In his letter to voters, he said he had "friends and readers in all parties".

The Panel contacted Marina's advisors, but there was no response. People close to the deputy say that Cury was consulted by her at the time, but did not contribute to her government plan.
