Lawyer Ümit Ö. was sentenced to 23 years, 5 months and 7 days in prison for supplying drugs inside the prison.

The detained defendant Ümit Ö. attended the hearing at the Istanbul Anatolian 10th High Criminal Court from prison via the Audio and Video Information System (SEGBİS). The defendant's lawyer was also present at the hearing. In his opinion on the merits, the public prosecutor stated that the defendant committed the crime in a chain manner and requested that he be punished.

FROM THE INDICTMENT

In the indictment prepared by the Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that the defendant lawyer gave drugs, including 100 liras of money, to a client in prison, and that the drugs were found on the convict immediately after the meeting. In the indictment, it was stated that the investigations were continuing because the defendant supplied drugs to other convicts, and it was requested that he be punished with a prison sentence of 2 to 5 years for the crime of 'bringing prohibited items into the execution institution or detention center', and 20 to 30 years for the crime of 'manufacturing and trading drugs or stimulants'.

DRUGS WERE SEIZED IN 2 SEPARATE INCIDENTS

The first incident took place on January 20, 2025, in Maltepe No. 1 L Type Closed Penitentiary Institution. Ümit Ö. opened his agenda during his meeting with his convicted client. It was determined that the convict took the item shown by the defendant in the agenda and put it in his sock. During the search following the meeting, 0.05 grams of drug and a napkin impregnated with drugs were seized from the convict's sock.

On January 27, 2025, Ümit Ö. met with another convict in Maltepe No. 2 L Type Closed Penitentiary Institution. During the detailed search carried out after the meeting, drugs with a tare weight of 20.4 grams were seized from the convict. During the criminal investigation, it was determined that the substances contained cocaine and synthetic cannabinoids. It was learned that the convict said that his lawyer Ümit Ö. gave him the drugs.

HE REQUESTED HIS ACQUITTAL AGAINST THE CONSULTATION

Defending against the opinion, Ümit Ö. stated that in the incident on January 20, 2025, the convict wrote his mobile phone number in his agenda and therefore had the agenda checked, and argued that he did not give drugs. Regarding the incident on January 27, 2025, he said that he knew the convict he was meeting with through a friend, that he went through a search before the meeting and that his agenda was checked. Stating that the meeting took place in front of the camera, Ümit Ö. claimed that the convict might have taken the substance from another person while coming from the ward and said, "I definitely did not give the substance to this person."

While requesting his acquittal, Ümit Ö. requested that if the court decides otherwise, his release should be decided, taking into account the long detention period, the loss of family relatives and the financial damages resulting from his inability to do his job.

23 YEARS 5 MONTHS 7 DAYS IN JAIL

Announcing its decision, the court ruled that the defendant committed the crimes of "bringing prohibited items into the execution institution or detention center" and "manufacturing and trading drugs or stimulants" more than once. The court decided that Ümit Ö. should be sentenced to 23 years, 5 months and 7 days in prison.
