The government specified 'semiconductors' as a local industry to be linked to Muan International Airport in its local airport revitalization strategy.
Attention is being paid to whether the plan to develop the Muan National Industrial Complex and Muan Airport into a production and logistics base for materials, parts, and equipment that will support the Honam semiconductor cluster will materialize.
According to the government and Jeonnam Gwangju Unified Special City on the 5th, the government presented a plan to develop specialized airports in connection with local industries as one of the measures to revitalize local airports in the 'Public Institution Functional Reform Promotion Plan' announced on the 3rd.
The government specified ‘Muan (semiconductor)’ as a specific example.
Although it is not a 'semiconductor specialized airport', the integrated city is interpreting the Muan Airport revitalization policy as intended to link it with the demand for the local semiconductor industry.
This plan is also in line with the function setting of Muan National Industrial Complex.
On the 25th of last month, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport designated 1.05 million pyeong (3.47㎢) in Hyeongyeong-myeon, Muan-gun as a candidate site for a national industrial complex.
Muan-gun had initially been pursuing a national industrial complex specializing in distributed energy based on RE100 (100% renewable energy), and later, in the process of relocating Gwangju Military Airport, expedited designation of the national industrial complex was included as one of the support measures for Muan, the relocation target.
As the promotion of the semiconductor cluster in the Honam area begins in earnest, the city of Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, is also pursuing a plan to combine not only the existing distributed energy industry but also semiconductor materials, parts, equipment, and export and logistics functions in the Muan National Industrial Complex.
If the national industrial complex to be built on the site where Gwangju Military Airport was relocated serves as a semiconductor production base, Muan may be responsible for the supply chain and export and logistics functions of semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment.
At the time of designating the industrial complex candidate site, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport also proposed a direction to develop the area into a logistics and industrial base based on the second phase of the Honam High-Speed Railroad project, including Muan Airport Station, and Muan Airport.
If the plan is realized, a blueprint that will lead to the revitalization of Muan Airport by linking the Gwangju Semiconductor Cluster and the Muan Small and Medium Business Complex national industrial complex can be completed.
However, the government has not yet confirmed that the main industry of the Muan National Industrial Complex will be semiconductors or decided on a separate 'semiconductor airport' support project.
An official from Gwangju City, South Jeolla Province said, "We believe that the example of 'Muan (semiconductor)' that appears in government data is intended to link the local semiconductor industry with the airport revitalization strategy." He added, "The specific functions and types of industries to be attracted to Muan National Industrial Complex will be decided in the process of establishing the industrial complex development plan in the future."
