Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and COP31 President, announced the climate and energy targets for 2035 within the scope of COP31 at the IRENA Electrification Day-Ministerial Meeting held in New York. The institution has set a target of 35 percent electrification by 2035, as well as reducing waste and reducing the energy intensity of buildings by 25 percent.
8 TO 10 GIGATON EMISSION REDUCTION IS TARGETED
IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera, COP28 President Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber and representatives of international organizations operating in the field of environment and climate attended the meeting held at the Turkish House.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, the Authority reminded that it was decided to triple renewable energy at COP28 and said that they aimed to further this goal at COP31.
The institution said, "At COP28, a decision was made to triple the renewable energy. This was a satisfactory decision, but at COP31, we took it one step further and in this sense, we set a target of 35 percent electrification by 2035." he said.
Stating that the world produces 50 to 58 gigatons of emissions today, the Authority said that they calculated an emission reduction of approximately 8 to 10 gigatons if the targets for electrification, waste reduction and reducing the energy intensity of buildings are achieved.
The institution said, "When we achieve the 35 percent electrification target, waste reduction target, and 25 percent reduction in the energy intensity of buildings by 2035, we calculate that we reduce approximately 8 to 10 gigatons of emissions. Therefore, we actually reduce nearly 20 percent of emissions. This is our goal."
INSTITUTION: THIS IS NOT A PREFERENCE, IT IS A NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUE
Stating that the number, frequency and severity of climate-related extreme weather events are increasing, the Authority drew attention to the flood disaster in Nepal.
The institution stated that the World Meteorological Organization announced data on drought and temperature records, and said that people lost their lives and cities were damaged due to disasters.
The institution evaluated, "Therefore, we all have to show our will together. This is not a choice, it is a matter of national security."
35 PERCENT TARGET IN ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION
The institution stated that new electricity networks, storage areas and infrastructure investments will be needed to realize the 2035 target.
Stating that the share of global electricity in final energy consumption is 21 percent today, Kurum said, "We want to achieve the 35 percent target by 2035, and this target will not actually be a single approach that describes the same path for all countries. It will take us all to a common direction while taking into account the different conditions, priorities and development paths of the countries." he said.
The institution said that a strong political momentum should be achieved towards this goal.
COP31 ELECTRIFICATION COMMITMENT IS ON THE AGENDA IN ANTALYA
Stating that they shared the COP31 Electrification Commitment with the international community, the Authority stated that they will invite countries to strengthen policies, investments and practices that will accelerate electrification in accordance with their own conditions.
The Authority said, "There will be no surprise decision in Antalya. Whatever we say, whatever we talk about today, we will say the same in Antalya, and we will run for its success." he said.
Stating that concrete solutions and application examples on topics such as network and storage investments, electrification of industry, integration of renewable energy, financing and new technologies will be discussed at the meeting, the Authority said that the resulting suggestions will be carried to the COP31 process.
The institution said, "We do not want the suggestions, good practices and cooperation opportunities that will emerge here to remain in New York. We want to carry out this process in Antalya, talk about the implementation and the project in Antalya, and we want to get results and results in Antalya."
