BC Premier David Eby Calls Snap Election, Citing Trump's Tariffs and Trade Threats

A Canadian provincial premier called a snap election on Tuesday, saying President Donald Trump's aggressive actions are putting local jobs, commercial enterprises, and the country’s ability to shape its own future at risk.

The decision to hold the early provincial election follows a breakdown in bilateral trade negotiations between the United States and Canada, deepening a dispute that has brought steep tariffs.

British Columbia Premier David Eby effectively placed Trump at the center of the upcoming vote, arguing that the election offers residents a choice between his administration’s efforts to withstand American economic pressure and political opponents he accused of embracing "MAGA-style politics."

"Join us saying hell no to Trump and to his politics," Eby said in announcing the Oct. 24 election.

The premier stated that Trump’s trade war and aggressive threats against Canada have altered economic conditions within British Columbia sufficiently enough to justify bringing voters to the polls two years ahead of schedule.

"Donald Trump is attacking our workers, he’s targeting our businesses, and he is threatening our sovereignty," Eby said. "He’s threatening our ability to make decisions for ourselves."

The left-leaning New Democratic Party leader said the province needs to construct a "firebreak" against Washington’s economic policies by safeguarding local workers and businesses, reducing reliance on the United States, and actively finding new markets for Canadian products.

"This isn’t just a trade dispute," Eby said. "It’s about the life that you and your family are building."

Citing recent trade data, Eby noted that British Columbia’s exports to the United States have fallen by 4%, while shipments to other international markets have risen by 16%.

He also vowed to keep American alcohol products off provincial shelves, saying "not one drop of Jack Daniels" would return until Canada receives a fair deal with the United States.

The New Democrats won a narrow majority in the 2024 provincial election, giving Eby enough seats to govern independently without relying on another party, and he was not required to call another election until 2028.

The election call also comes amid significant internal turmoil among the opposition British Columbia Conservatives. Kerry-Lynne Findlay resigned as party leader on Sunday after a wave of caucus defections and expulsions, and Lorne Doerkson was named interim leader.
