Old video allegedly showing a Houthi ambush on Giants forces in Taiz

(CNN) - Social media accounts circulated a video clip as being linked to an ambush set up by the Houthis against the "Giant Forces" in Taiz Governorate (western Yemen), amid the recent escalation of clashes.

The low-quality clip, shot from a distance, shows mountainous terrain with symbols and watermarks bearing the Houthi "war media" logo.

Publications claimed that the video was "leaked by the Houthi militias of a treacherous ambush of our sons from the Southern Giants in Al-Wazi'iyah (Taiz Governorate)."

CNN Arabic's investigation revealed that the video is old, and is not related to the fighting currently taking place between forces loyal to the Yemeni government and the Houthi group, which is supported by Iran.

By splitting the video into stills and using a reverse search, we found that the shots were contained in a longer video (longer than 4 minutes) 5 years ago.

The propaganda clip was published on the Houthi "War Media" website on June 29, 2021.

According to the website, the clip shows footage of alleged military operations by the Houthi group on the border with Saudi Arabia.

The recent reappearance of the video coincided with a wave of misinformation that accompanied the ongoing military confrontations in Yemen.
