历经一年多在轨测试,我国地月激光通信试验任务日前取得重要突破,科研团队成功在约40万公里的地月距离上建立起双向激光链路,首次实现地月双向高速激光通信。这标志着我国空间激光通信正式从近地轨道迈入地月空间。

空间激光通信是一种利用激光传输信息的通信方式。相较于传统微波通信,其具有多项优势:带宽大、速度快、方向准、保密性好。同时设备体积小、重量轻;可实现双向高速、收发自如。但距离越远,技术挑战越大。

“深空传输距离动辄数十万公里,对光束瞄准精度要求苛刻;激光信号远距离传输至地面后衰减极强,信号微弱至难以捕捉;高速传输技术受限,传输速度也一直提不上去。”中国科学院空间应用工程与技术中心研究员、激光通信试验科研团队负责人杨雷介绍。

超远距离精准瞄准,是本次试验攻克的首要难题。地月间通信好比“万里穿针”:相当于要在约40万公里外,将一束极细的光线精准穿过一个高速运动的“针孔”。发射端哪怕出现极其微小的角度偏差,抵达目标附近时也会产生数公里的位置误差。为此,科研团队创新性地提出了适用于超远距离、极微弱信号条件的双向捕获跟踪方案,通过对卫星轨道、望远镜安装及形变误差、大气折射、激光飞行时间等多种因素的计算和系统校准,让天上的卫星和地面的望远镜在运动中始终对准,确保激光能精准照到预定位置。

攻克瞄准难题后,极弱信号识别的挑战接踵而至。激光跨越约40万公里到达地面时,信号已衰减至仅剩余数个光子,地面望远镜能接收到的信号极少。与此同时,月光、星光、城市灯光等信号也会混入其间,对激光信号形成干扰,让有效信号的甄别难上加难,就像在千里之外喧嚣嘈杂的闹市中,准确听清一根针落地的声音。

针对这一难题,科研团队用上了能探测单个光子的“超灵敏探测器”,并开发了一套复杂的信号识别算法,从海量噪声中精准筛选,提取有效信号,成功突破瓶颈。

传输速度也得跟上。在实现信号稳定接收的基础上,团队持续攻坚,大幅提升数据处理效率。此次试验初步实现上行1.25Mbps(兆比特每秒)、下行100Mbps的通信速率。杨雷说:“以一幅8K月面高清图像为例,用传统5Mbps微波链路下传需4到5分钟;换成100Mbps激光通信后,只要约12秒。”

这项试验由中国科学院空间应用工程与技术中心牵头,联合之江实验室、中国科学院云南天文台、中国科学院上海微系统与信息技术研究所等多家单位协同攻关。

“地月之间的‘信息高速路’已经打通,未来我们将会获取到更多、更有原创价值的科学数据。”杨雷说,相关技术形成的轻量化、小尺寸、低功耗、高速率的信息传输能力,也将为我国载人登月、月球科研站建设和深空探测提供高速信息传输新手段,支撑我国空间科学与应用取得更多更好的原创性科学成果。
