4-year-old girl dies in Palermo from suspected diphtheria

A 4-year-old girl has died at the Children's Hospital of Palermo from suspected diphtheria. The little girl would not have been vaccinated. The body was seized by the Prosecutor's Office who, in addition to ordering the autopsy, will try to understand why the little girl had not been subjected to the mandatory vaccination and whether the hospital procedures were correct.

The little girl entered the hospital for the first time last Thursday complaining of symptoms such as fever, vomiting and loss of appetite. After the first tests ordered by the doctors, the little girl was discharged with a diagnosis of tonsillitis, while the parents were invited to return immediately to the emergency room in case of problems. Two days after discharge, however, his body temperature was high despite the drugs. During the investigations it emerged that the child had not been vaccinated by choice of the family.

The little girl was then hospitalized again and when the condition worsened the little girl was taken to the pediatric intensive care unit of Di Cristina. She passed away here. The case was reported by the hospital to the Palermo Prosecutor's Office which, in addition to arranging the autopsy in the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the Polyclinic, delegated the acquisition of the medical records to the Carabinieri to reconstruct the event and clarify any responsibilities.
