Military firefighter arrested after killing medical student in traffic fight in Taubaté

The Fire Department released a note this Thursday afternoon (1st) lamenting the death of medical student Bruno Hashimura San Juliano, aged 23, who was shot during an argument in traffic in Taubaté (SP).

The corporation reported that the military firefighter involved in the case is on unpaid leave and did not perform duties in the Vale do Paraíba region.

Bruno was killed on Wednesday morning (30), on Avenida Professor Walter Thaumaturgo, known as Avenida do Povo. Military firefighter Marcos Paulo Fujarra de Oliveira, aged 28, was arrested in the act, suspected of firing the shots.

This Thursday (1st), he underwent a custody hearing and was granted provisional release by the Court. Bruno Hashimura San Juliano was buried at Memorial do Vale, in Jardim California, in Jacareí.

In the note, the 11th Fire Brigade expressed solidarity with the student's family and friends and stated that they recognized the seriousness of the incident.

"We express our condolences and solidarity with the victim's family and friends. We recognize the seriousness of what happened and the shock caused by the loss of life."

The Fire Department also stated that it remains committed to the preservation of life, legality and respect for the population.

The corporation also stated that it hopes that the authorities responsible for the investigation will clarify the facts and adopt the necessary measures to hold those involved accountable, in accordance with the conclusions of the investigation and respecting due legal process.

The note is signed by Major PM Paulo Roberto Reis Teixeira de Souza, commander of the 11th Fire Brigade.

The case

Bruno was a 4th semester Medicine student at the University of Taubaté (Unitau). He was shot during an argument in traffic on Avenida do Povo, he ran after the shots, but succumbed to his injuries.

A video shows the student running down the street shortly after being hit. According to police, four to five shots were fired.

The military's defense, on the other hand, claims that Bruno had shown an object that the firefighter believed to be a weapon and that the shooting occurred in a situation of self-defense.

The police seized the .380 caliber pistol identified as the weapon used, as well as a pocket knife and Bruno's cell phone. Marcos is currently responding for intentional homicide. The classification may change as the investigation progresses.
