BRICS Leaders Call for Moderation in the Middle East

Leaders of BRICS countries, including both Iran and the United Arab Emirates, an ally of the United States, came together at the summit held in New Delhi, the capital of India. A joint statement was published after the summit.

'WE ARE DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE TENSION IN THE MIDDLE EAST'

BRICS countries expressed their "deep concern" over the war in the Middle East and called for maximum restraint through a "multilateral approach" that respects national views.

"We are deeply concerned about the continued escalation of tensions in the Middle East. We call for maximum restraint and avoidance of actions that could further worsen the situation," the statement said. The declaration emphasized the commitment of member states to the peaceful resolution of international disputes "through dialogue, consultation and diplomacy". It was also stated that there is concern about the increase of "unilateral customs and non-tariff measures" that disrupt trade, against the backdrop of the sanctions imposed by the USA on Tehran due to its war with Iran and on Russia due to its conflict with Ukraine.

IT CONSISTS OF 10 COUNTRIES

BRIC was founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China in 2006 and is known as a consultation and cooperation platform that was named "BRICS" with the participation of the Republic of South Africa in 2011. As a result of the expansion in August 2023, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran also joined BRICS. Indonesia became a member of BRICS in January 2025.
