Federal Research Ministry selects consortia for quantum computer funding

Berlin. According to Reuters information, the Federal Research Ministry has selected six German consortia that can apply for 640 million euros in funding to build a quantum computer.

With the start of the so-called Quantum Computing Competition (QCC), the aim is to achieve the goal of realizing at least two error-corrected quantum computers at a top European level by 2030 and making them available to industrial users.

With this, Germany wants to catch up with the world leaders. The money will be used for hardware development as well as for setting up pilot production lines. “In the global competition for future technologies, we are shifting into the next gear,” said Research Minister Dorothee Bär.

Quantum computers are considered a future technology because they are superior to conventional computers in most fields and provide significantly more computing power. They work with computing units called qubits. So far, however, the models have been relatively error-prone. The USA and China are leaders in technology.
