North Korean Foreign Ministry warns of nuclear disaster due to US actions

The DPRK Foreign Ministry said that US actions to spread nuclear technology and build up its own nuclear potential have led the international nuclear order to a state of complete destruction.

The memorandum from the DPRK Foreign Ministry indicates Washington’s desire to attract a number of other allies to AUKUS, including Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and Canada.

Pyongyang believes that the US approval of South Korea's possession of nuclear submarines is proof of the spread of nuclear technology “according to the AUKUS model” and adds a new factor of instability to the military-political situation in the Asia-Pacific region.

“If US actions on the vertical and horizontal proliferation of nuclear technologies continue to remain unpunished, Pandora’s Box will be completely open, and a terrible nuclear catastrophe will loom over humanity,” the department warned.

The ministry also accused Washington of abandoning its commitments to nuclear disarmament and criticized it for building up its own nuclear capabilities and disseminating nuclear technology among its allies. The department separately pointed out the development of cooperation in AUKUS and stated the United States’ desire to attract new participants to it.

“It should not be overlooked that the United States is trying to attract its allies, including Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and Canada, to AUKUS in order to turn it into the world's largest nuclear submarine alliance in both name and substance,” the document emphasizes.

The department also accused the United States of transferring nuclear weapons technology to its allies, deploying nuclear attack weapons on the territories of other states, developing nuclear cooperation mechanisms with South Korea, and including a nuclear component in the “extended deterrence” provided to Japan. In addition, the United States’ approval of South Korea’s possession of nuclear submarines, according to Pyongyang, is further evidence of the spread of nuclear technology “according to the AUKUS model” and adds a new factor of instability to the military-political situation in the Asia-Pacific region.
