Carney: Possibility of US Military Action against Canada is Being Examined

Carney answered questions from the New York Times (NYT) newspaper in New York, where he was part of the 81st United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

Stating that they consider the possibility of Trump ordering a possible military operation against Canada as "a risk that is extremely unlikely, but could have very serious consequences if it happens," Carney stated that he spoke frequently with the US President despite the deadlock in trade talks between the two countries.

When asked whether he took Trump's threats to make Canada the "51st state" seriously, the Canadian leader carefully examined the possibility of the US taking military action against his country and said: "This is just a matter of risk management, not the actual scenario, but it would be irresponsible not to prepare for it." he said.

Carney described how his country has systematically reduced its dependence on the United States for critical technologies, from space satellites to warplanes, to become less vulnerable to US threats.

In addition, Carney emphasized that despite the deadlock in trade negotiations between the two countries last month, a trade agreement of common interest could "absolutely" be reached between his country and the United States.

In July, the US administration announced that Canada would impose a 50 percent customs duty on some goods imported from this country, claiming that it had "discriminatory" practices against American products, and these tariffs came into force on August 22.

In response, the Canadian administration announced that customs duties of 15, 25 or 50 percent would be applied to certain US products, and these tariffs began to be applied on September 8.
