Trump's dangerous suggestions

It is worth noting that Donald Trump has repeatedly talked about transforming Canada into the 51st state of America and called prime ministers "governors."

In early January 2025, Canadian media widely quoted Trump as saying that as president he would consider using "economic force" to force Canada to join the US. He later admitted that he had no right to join any country in the US.

"Canada will never become part of the US"

At the beginning of February last year Trudeau said - addressing a group of nearly 200 business representatives and trade union organizations gathered at the Toronto economic summit - that Trump really wants to annex Canada and make it the 51st US state. The prime minister also allegedly said that the American president believes that the easiest way to obtain the raw materials needed by the US economy, including critical minerals and energy, is to "take over our country", and this threat is a "reality", reported the French-language public broadcaster Radio-Canada at the time.
