After Eni, Socar, an Azerbaijani energy company, has also decided to "calm the prices of fuels marketed on the Italian market by the subsidiary Italiana Petroli (Ip)".
This can be read in a note from the group, which finalized the acquisition of Italiana Petroli from Api Holding on 8 May. The group, it is explained, has decided to "strengthen its commitment towards Italy" with "the aim of setting a limit to the sales prices of petrol and diesel along the fuel distribution network".
The limit will come into effect from tomorrow and "will be applied progressively, starting from the IP brand network - it is explained - guaranteeing significant support to the partners and network operators with whom the company has built over the years a relationship of full trust, transparency and collaboration, which distinguishes it within the national energy panorama".
"It is an important signal of attention to Italian families which confirms that it is possible to concretely contribute to containing the cost of fuel. I would like to thank the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, for the signal of attention which strengthens our cooperation, and the president of Socar, Rovshan Najaf". Thus the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, assuring that "the government will continue to work to support families and protect their purchasing power, especially in this complex international phase".
From tomorrow the Eni discount: the company has set a ceiling of 2.19 euros per liter for diesel and 1.99 for petrol from next Monday.
The detail of the discount
"The price value will be established based on the different needs to guarantee the survival of the supply chain, made up of thousands of operators", explains the note, which underlines that "in this way the Azerbaijani state company adheres to the Italian Government's appeal to meet the needs of families and businesses, which for over six months have been faced with extraordinarily high fuel prices due to the context of strong geopolitical instability that impacts global supply chains".
The limit will come into effect from tomorrow and "will be applied progressively", explains the note. "At the same time, the most effective ways to extend the mechanism to Esso branded stations and to other operators in the supply chain who supply from IP and distribute through their own brands throughout the national territory will be studied".
New increases today
But in the meantime today there are new increases - and new protests - in fuel prices, both on roads and motorways. The Ministry of Business and Made in Italy announces that, based on the latest data collected by the Mimit Observatory on fuel prices, the average price of fuel in 'self service' mode along the national road network is equal to 2.159 euros per liter for petrol (from 2.158 yesterday) and 2.377 euros per liter for diesel (from 2.357 yesterday). On the motorway network, diesel is increasingly closer to 2.5 euros per litre: the average self-service price is 2.254 euros for petrol (2.252 yesterday) and 2.459 euros for diesel (from 2.439 yesterday).
Taxi drivers ready to strike
Taxi unions are ready to strike. The high cost of fuel adds to a series of other critical issues affecting the category and has led the situation to become "unsustainable", explain Unica Taxi Filt Cgil and Uiltrasporti interviewed by ANSA. The unions have already asked the government for a meeting, but if they do not receive a response, "a stoppage of service" will be inevitable for them.
"We have already sent more than one request to the government in terms of concrete interventions" on the high cost of fuel, "such as a reduction in excise duties or an increase in the tax credit. This week a new letter was sent in which we also ask for measures related to other issues that have remained pending such as the implementing decrees of the rules on the sector and if necessary we are absolutely ready to take to the streets", also says Carlo Di Alessandro, Rome provincial president of Federtaxi Cisal, interviewed by ANSA on the issue of the price rise of fuels.
