The CDU presidium will discuss election defeats on October 11th

The CDU presidium will meet in Berlin on October 11th for a closed meeting to discuss the consequences of the series of defeats in the three state elections in September. A party spokeswoman confirmed the date to the German Press Agency.

In the election in Saxony-Anhalt, the CDU fell by almost 20 percentage points to 17.2 percent, while the AfD almost achieved an absolute majority. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the party was thrown out of a state parliament for the first time and in Berlin it was pushed into second place by the Left.

On Monday, after the elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Chancellor and party leader Friedrich Merz announced that the party leadership would discuss “the course and the process of the coming weeks” in order to achieve a “new togetherness”. At the same time, he campaigned for the implementation of the reforms that had already been agreed with the SPD.

Merz under pressure

Merz came under massive pressure due to the election defeats, but the eight CDU state premiers initially supported him. All state heads of government take part in the deliberations of the party executive committee. The top committee has a total of around 25 members.

Already this evening, Merz is meeting with the Union's Prime Ministers for the traditional fireside chat in order to prepare for the Federal Council meeting on Friday. This conversation will probably once again focus on the consequences of the election defeats.
