Intense rains, hail and tornadoes cause destruction in Paraná

The Paraná Meteorological System (Simepar) reported that, until 7:30 pm this Thursday, the municipalities that had the highest volume of rain were Campo Mourão (117.8 mm), Ponta Grossa (85.4 mm), Mangueirinha (80.4 mm), Coronel Domingos Soares (75.4 mm), São Mateus do Sul (73.2 mm) and União da Vitória (72.8 mm).

In the southwest of the state, hailstorms were recorded in the afternoon. In Dois Vizinhos, Civil Defense estimates that 500 homes were damaged. In Ramilândia, in the western region, more than 250 houses were roofed and another 50 were destroyed.

According to the Paraná Meteorological System (Simepar), in less than 24 hours, two tornadoes passed through the state. The phenomena affected the municipalities of Francisco Alves, in the northwest of the state, and Espigão Alto do Iguaçu, in the west.

In Espigão Alto do Iguaçu, two schools were destroyed after the phenomenon occurred. Images recorded by residents show that the wind destroyed a eucalyptus plantation in the city.

In Ponta Grossa, in Campos Gerais, a family died buried while sleeping after a ravine collapsed on top of a house during a storm. According to the Fire Department, the bodies of the mother, son and stepfather were found in the same bed, inside a room.

In Curitiba, where the volume of rain recorded was 46.4 mm, a house collapsed in the morning. Civil Defense was called, isolated the site and, shortly afterwards, the structure collapsed. Nobody was injured.
