CNN investigates: A circulating video of an attack on an old Saudi oil tanker dates back to an incident in the Danube River.

Social media accounts circulated a video clip allegedly linked to an attack launched by the Houthi group in Yemen against the Saudi oil tanker (Amzan) in the Red Sea.

The viral clip shows flames engulfing the hull of a ship, amid smoke and debris scattered inside its command center.

The video, which received tens of thousands of views on the X website alone, was accompanied by a misleading description that said: “A fire broke out on the Saudi ship “Amzan” as a result of the targeting and the escape of a number of other ships that were present in the targeting area.”

CNN Arabic's investigation revealed that the video is old, as it dates back to a Russian attack on the Turkish-owned cargo ship "MV AGN RAGNAR", which flies the flag of Palau, in the northern branch of the Danube River.

Using a reverse search, we found a version of the video that was posted on Instagram on July 27, 2026.

At the time, the publishing account (merchantnavyinsights) wrote, commenting: “New high-resolution footage appeared showing a Russian drone attack on the cargo ship MV AGN RAGNAR... on Saturday (July 25),” which was confirmed by news reports about the attack occurring on that day.

The return of the video to circulation coincided with the Iranian-backed Houthi group, in a statement on Monday, saying that it had targeted the oil ship "Amzan" off the coast of the city of Yanbu in the Red Sea "with a ballistic missile. The hit was accurate and direct and led to a fire breaking out on the ship."

The Saudi National Shipping Company (Bahri) announced on Monday that one of its oil tankers was involved in a security incident in the Red Sea, without any casualties among its crew.

The company indicated that the tanker "Amzan" belonging to its fleet was subjected to the security incident, and that "all crew members are fine and their safety has been confirmed without any injuries recorded."

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Authority (UKMTO) announced earlier Monday that a tanker was targeted by an unknown projectile 63 nautical miles west of the Saudi coastal city of Yanbu, which led to a fire breaking out on the main deck of the ship.

Since the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia has rerouted a large portion of its oil exports through Red Sea ports such as Yanbu.
