In Athens, AIK begins its tournament campaign against LASK Linz, which is participating in the Champions League for the first time in its history after achieving an amazing comeback against Celtic in the playoff round. Porto regained the Portuguese League title in the 2025-2026 season, thus returning to the Champions League, and participating for the 28th time in the league stage (group stage) of the competition, and is only surpassed in the number of participations in this round by Bayern Munich, with 30 participations, and Real Madrid and Barcelona, with 31 participations each.

The Belgian Football Association renewed its demand from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to provide clarification regarding the decision that allowed American striker Folarin Balogun to participate against Belgium in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, despite receiving a direct red card in the previous match.
Balogun had been sent off in the previous match against the United States, which meant he was suspended for one match, before FIFA decided to suspend the punishment for a year, making the player available to participate against Belgium, in one of the most controversial incidents of the tournament.
The British BBC network said that the Belgian Federation was among the parties that demanded a clear explanation of the decision from FIFA, along with the European Football Association (UEFA), especially after it revealed pressure and interventions from officials in the US White House regarding the issue.
Despite the controversy, Balogun started the match, having scored 3 goals until that round, before the confrontation ended with Belgium winning 4-1. The Belgian national team continued its journey until the quarter-finals, where it lost to Spain.
The Belgian Federation said on Monday that it had requested that the issue be included on the agenda of the FIFA Council meeting scheduled for next October 15, stressing that its questions are still unanswered two months after the incident.
“Our questions are still unanswered,” said Pascal Van Dam, president of the Belgian Federation. Given the importance of transparency and clarity for all parties concerned, we request the necessary explanations, and at the same time, we would like to explore ways to improve current procedures, to ensure that such cases are dealt with in a clear, consistent and effective manner in the future.”
The decision to suspend Balogun's punishment has an exceptional character, as his red card was the 189th in the history of the World Cup, and only the second in which the suspension was not carried out, after the case of the Brazilian Garrincha in the 1962 edition.
FIFA did not provide a detailed explanation of the decision, only referring to Article 27 of its disciplinary regulations, which allows it to suspend the implementation of the disciplinary penalty in full or in part. Nor was any other suspension penalty lifted during the 2026 World Cup.
The repercussions of the case are not limited to the disciplinary aspect, as the Belgian Federation announced, in its statement, that it will not support Swiss Gianni Infantino in his quest to win a new term as president of FIFA in the elections scheduled for next March.
The Union justified its position for two main reasons: The first is the way to deal with the Balogun case, and the second is the “FIFA Forward Enterprise” project, which sparked widespread controversy after it included plans to sell shares in competitions affiliated with the International Federation.
