MOSCOW, September 5 - RIA Novosti. The software on a phone or laptop should always be updated, since vulnerabilities can be exploited by scammers to steal data, Ilona Kokova, a leading information security expert at MWS Cloud, told RIA Novosti.

“Any software requires periodic updating, be it a watch, a smart station, a laptop or phone that stores personal data, photos and banking applications, and even a robot vacuum cleaner or a smart kettle that also connects to the network. Their software may also contain vulnerabilities through which you can gain access to the device or data,” she said.

The expert noted that under certain conditions, vulnerabilities allow attackers to bypass the protection provided by the developers and, for example, gain access to data on the device or perform an extraneous action allegedly from the user, install malicious software, or change device settings.

Kokova added that not only scammers look for vulnerabilities in the code, they are discovered by the developers themselves, information security specialists or independent researchers. Once a problem is discovered, the developer prepares a fix and releases an update. There is also additional information about the vulnerability, which programs are affected by it and how dangerous it is.
