Members of the European Parliament demand that the European Commission completely ban the breeding and killing of animals for fur in the EU.

The European Commission had to decide by March whether it would propose a complete ban on fur farming or limit itself to tightening requirements for keeping animals.

BRUSSELS, September 24 - RIA Novosti. MEPs from six political groups are increasing pressure on the European Commission to completely ban the breeding and killing of animals for fur in the EU, months after the import of rare sable skins from Russia was allowed again, Euractiv writes, citing a letter from MEPs.

“We call on you to ensure that the Commission's final communication explicitly includes a legislative ban on the keeping and killing of animals for fur production,” the 25 MEPs said in a letter to the union's executive body.

The European Commission had to decide by March whether it would propose a complete ban on fur farming or limit itself to tightening the requirements for keeping animals.

Six months later, no decision has been made. In 2023, the corresponding European citizens' initiative was supported by 1.5 million people.

The MEPs' demand came a few months after the EU, on the contrary, excluded Russian sable skins from the sanctions ban on fur imports. The European Commission explained the exclusion by Russia's dominant position in the global sable market and the lack of alternative suppliers.

Italy and Greece, the EU's largest buyers of Russian sable, were in favor of exclusion.

Russian sable is one of the most expensive types of fur in the world, and products made from it can cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of euros.
