Tenth death confirmed in bus overturn on BR-040 in Petrópolis

A tenth death was confirmed in the overturning of a bus at Km 91 of BR-040, in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, in the early hours of this Sunday (16). All the victims are female, according to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), but there is still no information about their ages.

Eight deaths at the incident site were initially reported. One person died at the Municipalized Hospital Adão Pereira Nunes, in Duque de Caxias, and, according to the PRF, the tenth person died in an emergency care unit in Petrópolis.

The collective from the company Estrela Guia Turismo left Belo Horizonte and was destined for the Copacabana neighborhood, in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. The vehicle was carrying 47 people and overturned at around 4:30 am.

The incident impacted the flow of vehicles on the highway, which only opened the lane shortly after 7am.

According to the first information from the PRF, the injured were taken to Hospital Santa Teresa, in Petrópolis, to Hospital Municipalizado Adão Pereira Nunes, in Duque de Caxias, and to Hospital Estadual Getúlio Vargas, in Rio de Janeiro. The Rio State Department of Health, however, said that the management of Getúlio Vargas did not register the entry of victims into the unit.

According to Duque de Caxias City Hall, 14 injured people were taken to Adão Pereira Nunes, of which one died. The others were still receiving care at the unit in the early afternoon of this Sunday.

Santa Teresa Hospital confirmed that it had received nine patients injured in the fall, but did not disclose individual details about the health status of the victims. According to the hospital, they are cared for by multidisciplinary teams, in accordance with care protocols and risk classification.
