RJ Civil Defense issues strong wind warning for early Tuesday

Rio de Janeiro's Civil Defense sent a cell phone warning of strong winds in the early hours of this Tuesday (22).

According to the text, the forecast is for a Tuesday with a cold front, heavy rain, winds and lightning.

With records of very strong winds since early in the morning, Rio had fallen trees and other damage in different regions of the city this Monday (21). In total, ten tree falls were recorded.

The strongest gust of wind, considered very strong by meteorology (above 76 km/h), occurred at Vidigal station (77.7 km/h), at 7:30 am, according to the Rio Alert System. There were also winds of 65 km/h in Marambaia, at 8 am.

It continued to be strong winds until the afternoon and there were tree falls in Leblon (at number 623 on Rua Timóteo da Costa) and Lagoa (Avenida Epitácio Pessoa, close to Curva do Calombo), even blocking traffic at around 2:34 pm. At the end of the afternoon, two trees were being removed by the city hall on Estrada dos Bandeirantes and Estrada do Cabungui, both in Vargem Grande.

In case of strong winds, COR-Rio recommends the following actions

At home:

Close windows, overhead windows and closet doors to prevent wind from channeling into the home.

Blinds, curtains or blackouts must also be closed to prevent fragments from spreading, in case a window breaks;

Electrical appliances and gas valves must be closed. This way, there is no aggravation in the event of a tree falling;

Avoid leaving objects that could fall in high places;

Keep trees in the garden or yard always pruned and well cared for;

Be careful: if there is a lack of light, be careful with the use of candles to avoid fires.

On the street:

Do not take shelter under trees or metal coverings;

Avoid practicing outdoor sports, especially at sea;

Avoid being close to cliffs, slopes or high places without protection;

Avoid passing under electrical cables, billboards, scaffolding, ladders;

Do not park vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs;

Do not burn garbage, do not set fire to land to remove vegetation, do not light fires or throw cigarette butts on roads or forested land;

Be careful: if a tree falls, it is possible that the power grid has been broken. In this situation, there is a risk of accidents caused by lightning.
