19-year-old prisoner dies in prison in Pordenone after setting fire to his mattress

A 19-year-old prisoner, an Egyptian citizen, died from monoxide fumes caused by the fire of his mattress in the Pordenone Castle prison.

This was a deliberate action: the boy, who was in a single cell, blocked the entrance with a chair just before 11pm and set the fire. Despite the intervention of the penitentiary police officers, the young man died shortly after the arrival of the healthcare personnel sent by the Sores Fvg operations center.

The firefighters put out the fire in a few minutes, subsequently analyzing the air quality throughout the night, to avoid risks to other inmates and staff on duty. Two other inmates, who occupied cells located in the same wing of the penitentiary, reported mild intoxication: they were transported as a precaution to the emergency room and were later taken back to the prison.

The young prisoner was arrested a few weeks ago for resisting a public official following a fight that took place in the center of Pordenone: he also had other small police records.
