Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Tripolice Massacre

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a statement on the 205th anniversary of the Tripolice massacre, in which tens of thousands of Muslim Turks were killed in the Peloponnese.

Sharing a post on its social media account, the ministry stated that the Muslim Turkish population was systematically massacred in the Peloponnese between 1821 and 1830.

In the ministry statement, it was stated that in addition to the massacres, places of worship, madrassas, cemeteries and other cultural heritage elements were also targeted.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "The Muslim Turkish population was systematically massacred in the Peloponnese Peninsula between 1821 and 1830. This policy of extermination was accompanied by a planned destruction and destruction ranging from places of worship to madrasahs, from cemeteries to other cultural heritage elements." he said.

At the end of its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs commemorated the Muslim Turkish civilians killed in Tripolice.

The Ministry said, "On the 205th anniversary of the Tripoliçe massacre, we commemorate the Muslim Turkish civilians who were brutally murdered." he said.

IT HAS BEEN 205 YEARS SINCE THE MASSACRE

During the Mora Revolt against the Ottoman Empire, which started on September 23, 1821, the rebels captured Tripoliçe. After the fall of the city, there was a massacre in which tens of thousands of Muslim Turks were killed.

At the beginning of the century, the majority of the population of Tripolice was Muslim Turks. While Greeks and Jews as well as Turks lived in the city, people from different ethnicities and cultures lived together for many years.

Tripolice also hosted many immigrants from Rumelia.

MORA REBELLION SPREAD WITH THE SUPPORT OF EUROPE

While previous Greek rebellions against the Ottoman Empire ended in failure, the Peloponnese Revolt quickly expanded with the support of European countries.

Tens of thousands of people lost their lives during the rebellion, which lasted from 1821 to 1829. It was stated that approximately 90 thousand Turks lived in the Peloponnese Peninsula until April 1821, and most of them were killed by the rebels.

KOLOKOTRONIS WAS DECLARED A "NATIONAL HERO"

Theodor Kolokotronis, one of the Greek gang leaders, was one of the prominent names in the massacres in Mora. Kolokotronis was considered a "national hero" in Greece and statues of him were erected in many parts of the country.
