German Interior Minister proposes accelerated deportations after migration crisis

The German Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, has asked this Saturday for an accelerated procedure to deport people after massive border crossings, such as the one that occurred on July 31 in the autonomous city of Ceuta.

"We need a new European mechanism to manage migration crises," Dobrindt declared at the beginning of a meeting in Munich with his counterparts from the European Union and with the European Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner.

Almost two months ago, more than 72,000 migrants, according to official sources, crossed en masse into this Spanish enclave in North Africa. From that maelstrom and migratory flow, it is estimated that at least 12,000 people (including minors) continue on the streets of the city.

"These waves are not caused by a humanitarian emergency, but are the result of misinformation," Dobrindt said. He himself pointed out that exceptional situations similar to that of Ceuta have repeatedly occurred at the external borders of the EU and advocated an urgent repatriation procedure for cases in which the authorities determine that an exceptional situation exists not linked to a humanitarian emergency.

According to Dobrindt, the European border control agency Frontex should also assist countries in such situations by deploying a rapid response force within 24 hours. The German country is committed to creating a rapid intervention force within the European border agency Frontex, in order to help States in the face of sudden migratory "pressure" at the external borders of the EU, as happened in Ceuta this summer. Europe must establish a "new support mechanism for countries that find themselves under such pressure on their external borders", declared Dobrindt, during the press conference held today in Munich.
