FAMEU promotes 5th edition of Medicina Experience for high school students

The proposal is to immerse yourself in medical training. During the morning, participants will be able to see the structure of the college, visit laboratories and try out equipment and technologies used by academics throughout the course. The activities will be accompanied by medical students and professors from the institution. The experience allows the student to leave, for a few hours, the position of someone just researching the profession to experience some of the activities that are part of medical training.

For the rector of FAMEU, João Gonçalves, initiatives such as Medicina Experience help bring young people closer to a decision that will have an impact on their entire professional career. "The moment of choosing a career is surrounded by expectations and also doubts. Our role, as an educational institution, is to offer information and experiences that help these students to make a more conscious decision. At Medicina Experience, they can learn about the structure, talk to those who are already studying Medicine and experience, in practice, some of what they will encounter during their training", he states.

The program was designed to welcome students at different times in high school. Those in their first year can get to know the profession in advance; second-year students have the opportunity to delve deeper into this choice; and those in their third year can use the experience as a complement to the information they are already seeking for the entrance exam.

According to Luciana Martins, one of the organizers of Medicina Experience, it is not necessary to be about to take the entrance exam to participate. "The event is open to students in the first, second and third years of high school. We want to welcome both those who are already sure that they intend to study Medicine and those who are still learning about career possibilities. The idea is that everyone can experience the activities, get to know FAMEU and leave with more information to make their choices", he explains.

The experience also allows students to have contact with a characteristic present in FAMEU's training proposal: the combination of theoretical knowledge, practice and technology. The college has laboratories aimed at developing medical skills, digital anatomy, microscopy, biochemistry, augmented reality and simulation of situations close to those found in professional practice. The structure was presented by the institution as part of a training proposal that seeks to put students in contact with technological resources and practical activities from the first periods.

At FAMEU, technology is used as a tool to bring academic learning closer to the reality of the profession. Labs allow students to develop skills before arriving in care environments, training procedures and clinical situations in a controlled space. This proposal is also present in the institution's Realistic Simulation Center, which uses models and equipment to reproduce situations that future doctors will encounter throughout their career. All of these spaces will be accessible to the public in this 5th edition of Medicina Experience.

Practical experience is also a characteristic that accompanies FAMEU students throughout their degree. Contact with real health situations begins in the early stages and expands during training, reaching the medical internship. Contact with the community also appears in extension projects developed by students, such as health promotion and social service actions. The proposal is to associate technical training with understanding people's needs and the reality of the health system.

For those who are choosing a course, having contact with it is essential for an assertive decision. That's how Maria Tereza, 19 years old and a 4th period student at FAMEU, decided. "My sister also chose Medicine and works in the field of gynecology. Being able to follow her routine at work made me sure of the course to take. This opportunity to get to know the profession and the course while we are still in high school helps a lot. That's why Medicina Experience can be an important help for those who want to be sure of a medical career", he says.

The opportunity to learn about the course was also decisive for student Victor Hugo Lasmar Ávila. He is in the 4th period of Medicine and had the opportunity to get to know the university before the entrance exam. "In my family I already had my first contacts with a medical career. But it was during the pre-university course that I wanted to visit FAMEU and I had the opportunity for a professor to welcome me and introduce me to the entire structure of the college, the laboratories and the routine, where I became even more fascinated by the course. After that I was sure that this was my future and my purpose in life."

The possibility of finding out more about the course that helped Maria Tereza and Victor Hugo choose their profession is precisely what FAMEU intends to provide to participants in the new edition of Medicina Experience. It means knowing Medicine beyond what appears in books, on social media or in information about the entrance exam. During one morning, students will be able to move around the institution, visit the training spaces, talk to those who are already studying their degree and get their hands dirty.
