Far-Right AfD Scores Historic Victory in Saxony-Anhalt Election

Berlin’s political establishment is staggering after the far-right Alternative for Germany scored a historic victory in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday night, forcing mainstream parties to confront how to keep it from power — and explain its stunning rise.

The AfD won 43.8 percent of Sunday’s vote, more than doubling its 2021 result. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s center-right Christian Democratic Union crashed to 17.2 percent, its worst-ever showing in the eastern state.

Thorsten Frei, leader of the CDU/CSU group in the Bundestag, called the result a “turning point for our country” and said conservatives must ask why they were no longer reaching voters. CDU Secretary-General Franziska Hoppermann rejected any debate over Merz’s future and again ruled out cooperation with either the AfD or The Left.

Saxony-Anhalt’s incumbent premier Sven Schulze, from the CDU, struck a more sober note on Sunday night. “Some say this is a dark day for Saxony-Anhalt. I say: That’s democracy,” he told ARD. “The people went to the polls today.”

The rout piles pressure on Merz, who once vowed to cut the AfD in half but has been chancellor while the far-right party has boomed in the polls.

Social Democratic Party co-leader Lars Klingbeil called the vote a “signal to Berlin” and said the result should prompt the federal government to reflect on its policies. Co-leader Bärbel Bas said the result was “frightening many people,” while Green co-chair Felix Banaszak described the AfD surge as “dramatic.”

The Left’s Heidi Reichinnek branded the result “catastrophic,” blaming federal government policies for creating fertile ground for the far right. But the CDU’s refusal to cooperate with The Left makes constructing an anti-AfD majority harder.

Left-populist BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht declared the “firewall policy” a failure in a post on X, warning another coalition built purely to exclude the AfD would be an “affront” to voters.

The AfD, meanwhile, claimed a mandate to govern. Co-leader Alice Weidel hailed a “historic result,” while fellow co-leader Tino Chrupalla declared: “Ulrich Siegmund will be our new minister-president,” referring to the party’s lead candidate in Saxony-Anhalt.

Chrupalla then turned Merz’s own rhetoric back on him: “We’ve cut the CDU in half.”

Yet the AfD won just 39 of 83 seats in Saxony-Anhalt, leaving it just short of a majority. The far right’s rivals now face a scramble to find a government capable of surviving without it.

Chrupalla, meanwhile, said the party would send invitations for talks to all other parties. “Then we’ll see who slaps away our hand,” he told public broadcaster ARD on Monday. Asked whether the AfD could push for fresh elections if no workable majority emerges, Chrupalla said the party was “prepared for all scenarios.”
