According to political scientist Mustafa Sehimi, quoted by Le Monde daily, the nomination of a woman to the position of head of government is groundbreaking. It recalls the appointment in 2023 of Samira Sitail as Moroccan ambassador to France, also the first woman to hold this position.

The BBC emphasized that El Mansouri will become the second woman to hold such a position in the Arab world after the Tunisian Najla Bouden.

The daily also notes that 50-year-old El Mansouri is one of the youngest heads of government in the history of Morocco.

Connections with Marrakech

Previously, the politician was the first woman to head a group of over 500,000 people. inhabitants of the city - Marrakech. From 2021, she served as Minister of Spatial Development and Urban Planning, and from 2024, she has been a member of the top management of PAM, of which she is co-chair.

As "Le Monde" reminds, El Mansouri comes from a wealthy background, closely associated with the power elites. Her family ties link her to Thami El Glaoui, pasha of Marrakech and one of the most powerful men in Morocco during the French protectorate period from 1912 to 1956. Her father was ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, a country with close relations with the Moroccan monarchy.

Elections in Morocco

In the parliamentary elections, PAM won 97 seats in the 395-seat parliament. The next places were taken by the centrist National Rally of Independents (RNI) with 66 seats, the Istiqlal party with 65 and the Islamic Party of Justice and Development (PJD) with 54. Left-wing parties such as the USFP, PPS and FGD won 26, 19 and 8 seats respectively.
