FC Augsburg lead the Bundesliga for the first time – coach Baum emphasizes staying on the ground

Manuel Baum captured the historic moment of FC Augsburg leading the Bundesliga table for the first time for eternity. “I took a screenshot of the table so I can always have it with me on my cell phone,” reported the FCA coach after the 4-1 (0-1) win at Eintracht Frankfurt and the jump to first place.

Of course, the 47-year-old soccer teacher knows that this is just a snapshot. But: “We humans all live from moments. When we meet again in a few years, we will all tell each other that Augsburg was once able to be top of the table. I think you can enjoy it for a day. That’s part of it,” said Baum proudly.

Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen, who was once again convincing, was also happy about moving to the top of the table. “It’s just great,” said the 28-year-old and immediately added: “We are aware that it won’t stay like this for the whole season.”

Coach urges you to stay grounded

Baum also didn't want to derive any new claims from the fantastic start to the season with six points and 7:1 goals. He was asked whether Augsburg was now ready for the fight for Europe. «I was already able to gain some experience in the business. In the past I often made the mistake of setting out any goals. All we care about is trying to win a game every week,” was his diplomatic answer.

Nevertheless: The way Augsburg came back in Frankfurt after a completely messed up first half and the early deficit thanks to a goal from Jonathan Burkardt (6th minute) was classy. Arijon Ibrahimovic (46th), Robin Fellhauer (47th), Alexis Claude-Maurice (65th) and Fabian Rieder (89th) turned the game around with their goals after the change.

Coach praises the squad

This was preceded by a critical break speech from Baum. “The nice thing is that we now have a culture in the team where we can address things clearly. It was clear that the team would only get ten more minutes in this form. What the team did then was outstanding,” said Baum.

Even if the coach didn't want to announce any specific goals, he made it clear that the Bavarian Swabians are a force to be reckoned with this season. «We have a sensational squad and therefore a great bench. You can replace half of the field players. What comes in is really great,” said Baum.

Bayern loanee Ibrahimovic also spoke highly of the team. «I would say that we are a unit and we all stick together. And there is a good atmosphere in the team, including in the dressing room,” reported the 20-year-old and announced: “We want to continue like this and stay at the top.”
