For Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the question that the parties must ask themselves on the path already underway towards the next electoral event is "what are the Spaniards called to do?" And the leader of the PP already knows what his answer is, the one with which he will address the citizens in search of their trust: "I want to call on the Spanish people to renew the social contract, the social contract that sustains any democracy." "What has been broken in Spain is the social contract that feeds trust in the State," Feijóo explained at the closing ceremony of the FAES Campus, and thus he has committed to launching a "national reconstruction" if he reaches La Moncloa.
This Friday's event, in which the popular leader has been supported by the former president of the Government José María Aznar, has in many moments acquired overtones of a pre-campaign kick-off speech. Feijóo has drawn the next general elections as a "great national call" to which, he said, he is addressing "with security, but without triumphalism." "Nothing is done yet," he wanted to emphasize, also pointing out that a hypothetical victory for the right at the polls "would be just the beginning." "My goal does not end with firing [Pedro] Sánchez, but rather ending everything he represents," he said.
Feijóo has delved into this idea throughout his speech, arguing that in our country the "social contract that feeds trust in the State" has been "broken." "Spain does not need a mere replacement of its government, it needs a national reconstruction," the popular leader stressed, presenting himself as the candidate willing to launch it. "My only ambition is to rebuild my country. I don't have a career to build, and I don't have a later exit to look for," he slipped in this sense.
Aznar had praised him repeatedly before. "Alberto's victory will be the victory of all Spaniards," said the former president, also praising his "sense of State and clearly governmental vocation." Aznar has valued the popular leader against his rivals on both sides, calling for "electing politicians and not demagogues" and highlighting his "patriotism", in what can be read as a dart towards those who are further to his right: "[Feijóo] does not need to dress up as captain of the thirds to show off as Spanish."
Receiving with "calm" the "little pressure" that Aznar has put on him, Feijóo said ironically, the popular leader has outlined in his speech what will be the axes of his policy if he reaches La Moncloa. And he has done so by repeatedly insisting that his objective is to make a 180-degree turn from the course set by the current Executive, against which he has not spared any criticism: "We live under a Government with fewer principles than some organized crime clans," he has even launched.
Feijóo has advocated for "restoring institutions" and "reversing the partisan capture of the State's counterpowers" - "independent judges, independent prosecutors, independent regulatory bodies" -. "That things work, that there are no blackouts, that the train arrives on time," the popular one has expressed as a commitment, also emphasizing his commitment to lower taxes so as not to "continue squeezing" the middle class.
