Pre-retirement benefit in Poland is a form of support for people close to retirement age who have lost their job for specific reasons. Its granting depends on meeting the conditions regarding insurance experience, age and situation on the labor market, including previous receipt of unemployment benefits.
Support is not granted automatically, says Gazeta Prawna. ZUS checks both the applicant's professional situation, his age and insurance experience.
As a rule, a person applying for benefits must first receive unemployment benefits for at least 180 days. During this time, the employee may not, without justified reasons, reject offers of suitable work, internship or intervention work presented by the employment office.
The timing is also key. The application to ZUS must be submitted within 30 days of receiving a document from the labor office confirming the 180-day benefit collection period.
A woman can receive the benefit after the age of 55
The lowest age threshold specified in the regulations applies to women dismissed for reasons related to the workplace - for example, as a result of job reduction or liquidation of a position. They must be over 55 years of age and have at least 30 years of experience.
For men in the same situation, they must be 60 years old and have at least 35 years of experience.
Entitlement to benefits may also depend on other circumstances:
in the event of liquidation of a company or insolvency of an employer, a woman must usually be at least 56 years old and have 20 years of experience, and a man - 61 years and 25 years of experience;
after declaring bankruptcy of your own business, similar age and experience thresholds apply, and the business must be run and covered by contributions for at least 24 months;
support may also be provided to persons whose right to a disability pension due to incapacity for work has expired after a minimum of five years - after the age of 55 for women and 60 for men, with 20 and 25 years of service, respectively;
similar rules apply to people who lost care benefits after the death of the person under their care.
In some cases, a long insurance period allows you to meet the conditions without having to reach the indicated age threshold. This is 34 years of experience in the case of women and 39 years in the case of men - however, the detailed assessment always depends on the basis for terminating employment.
You can earn extra money, but you have to respect the limits
As Gazeta Prawna writes, receiving pre-retirement benefits does not prevent you from getting additional work. However, your income may affect the amount of your ZUS payment.
In the period from March 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027, the full benefit is due with a monthly income of up to PLN 2,225.90 gross. If the earnings are higher, but do not exceed PLN 6,232.50 gross, ZUS will reduce the payment accordingly.
