Florence, car hits a group of cyclists: 8 injured, 3 seriously

Serious road accident this morning in Signa (Florence), where a car hit a group of cyclists who were traveling along Via dello Stradone dei Renai. According to initial reconstructions, the accident occurred around 10 am when the car, driven by a woman, invaded the oncoming lane, hitting several cyclists before running off the road. The provisional toll is at least eight injured, three of whom are in very serious conditions.

The accident

From an initial reconstruction it seems that the car, a Seat Ibizia driven by a 65-year-old woman, who was proceeding towards Campi Bisenzio, invaded the opposite lane where the cyclists were pedaling. An air ambulance was also called to the scene to transport one of the cyclists to the hospital. The Carabinieri of the Sesto Fiorentino station intervened for the findings. It remains to be clarified how the driver ended up in the oncoming lane: a distraction is also among the hypotheses being examined. The woman tested negative for alcohol.

The air ambulance

The rescue machine was activated with the intervention of numerous teams and medical vehicles. Two medical ambulances from the Misericordia di Campi Bisenzio and the Misericordia di Poggio a Caiano arrived at the scene of the accident, as well as two medical vehicles from Torregalli. The voluntary associations of the Misericordia of San Mauro a Signa, the Public Assistance of San Donnino, the Public Assistance of Poggio a Caiano and the Public Assistance of Prato Sud also intervened. For one of the injured, whose conditions were said to be the most critical, the intervention of the Pegaso regional air ambulance was necessary, which landed in the area of ​​the accident to allow him to be transferred to hospital. Two other cyclists suffered very serious injuries. The overall conditions of the injured remain to be clarified on the basis of medical updates.
