Cleveland Police Receive £2m Funding Boost After Fatal Crash and House Fire

Cleveland Police will receive a £2 million funding boost to tackle serious crime following a fatal crash on the A66 that killed two officers and five young men, and a house fire in Grangetown that killed two and injured four. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced the funding in Parliament, citing a 'sense of disquiet' in the community. The funding is separate from real-term budget increases, which will add £7 million to Cleveland Police compared to last year. Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Matt Storey welcomed the boost but warned it does not address chronic underfunding, stating the force needs at least £20 million annually to recruit 200 more officers. A 23-year-old man, Jaden Wright, appeared in court on murder charges related to the Grangetown fire and was remanded in custody. Investigators are not treating the crash and fire as connected.
