Several workers sought treatment after a suspected gas alarm at SSAB in Luleå

During Wednesday, several workers sought emergency care after an alarm about suspected cyanide gas at SSAB in Luleå. At the time, SVT reported that it was about seven people - but according to NSD's sources, it should be twice that number.

During Thursday, SVT was in contact with Martin Gidlund, who is responsible for communications for SSAB's new steel mill construction. He cannot confirm NSD's information about how many workers sought treatment at Sunderby Hospital during the day.

However, Gidlund announces that work is still paused in the area where the gas alarm went off.

- Right now, they are talking to staff and evaluating the situation. At the main workplace itself, work is going on as usual, he tells SVT.

According to SSAB, all the people who sought treatment were able to leave the hospital the same day without any symptoms, except for one who reportedly had a headache.

SSAB was informed on February 19 about the first case of illness at the construction site of the new steel mill. The work was paused and moved to another location.

On April 3, all work at the construction site was stopped after several subcontractors were affected by symptoms of illness. These include irritated airways, nosebleeds, headaches and nausea.

After carrying out extensive measurements, SSAB reports its causal analysis of the disease cases on 26 May. The assessment is that they arose as a result of exposure to fine dust particles as the primary factor, which is enhanced by low humidity and seasonal respiratory virus.

The restart of the construction site started on May 27. SSAB announced that it must be controlled and step-by-step, area by area in cooperation with the contractors and authorities concerned.

In total, 34 incidents regarding symptoms or cases of illness have been reported.

On September 23, several workers seek emergency care after a portable gas alarm is triggered. All were able to leave the hospital the same day.
