BER Airport: Service employee seriously injured in attack

A service employee at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) was seriously injured in an attack in the security area at the beginning of September. As the rbb reports, citing Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB), the crime occurred on September 6th, shortly before the departure of an Air Baltic flight to Tallinn. “Bild” first reported on the case.

Accordingly, a passenger is said to have attacked the employee after he was denied boarding. Surveillance cameras are said to have recorded the incident. According to media reports, the recordings show that the attacker hit his victim with fists and kicks for several minutes. A second man is said to have intervened and kept possible helpers at a distance.

The airport operator officially confirmed the incident. Airport manager Aletta von Massenbach told rbb that the extent of the violence was shocking. The employee had to be treated by emergency services and taken to hospital. For reasons of privacy, the airport initially did not comment on the exact state of health.

As “Bild” reported, citing the employee’s colleagues, the man had to undergo emergency surgery that same night. It was therefore unclear at the time whether he would retain his ability to see. The background was serious injuries in the eye socket area. According to the information, the victim is still in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Berlin-Neukölln.

The state police are investigating the case. The Cottbus public prosecutor's office initially did not provide any further information on the status of the investigation against the two suspects, who, according to information from "Bild", are said to be Estonian nationals.
