Football Club Seeks Survival with Ambitious Rebuild Under Darren Arnott

Darren Arnott likens the ongoing challenge for Football Club to that of someone “hanging on to a cliff and trying to pull themselves up”. When they lost their grip on the precipice last season, local football chiefs handily provided a safety net, sparing the Hong Kong Premier Division’s bottom team from relegation to the First Division. Having finished dead last in the previous campaign, too, they are unlikely to get lucky a third time. Boasting a slim budget and, as a members’ club, confronted with unique challenges, Football Club have got creative in their quest to keep their future in their own hands. A touch more ambitious, too, given they have wrenched Darren Arnott, a head coach with “world-class pedigree and credentials”, according to the club’s director of soccer, Shane Jeffrey, out of the clutches of the same Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) that waved through their reprieve. Jeffrey, whose official title is congruous with his American nationality, said that former Leeds United coach Arnott, 40, represented “the next phase of [Football Club’s] professional development: tactical sophistication, ruthless structural discipline and a proven commitment to elite high-performance standards”. The Englishman’s appointment to replace Chancy Cooke, who will focus solely on his academy technical director role after two years as first-team boss, coupled with an imaginative summer’s recruitment that exploited Arnott’s “intimate knowledge” of the English and local football scenes, has validated the HKFA’s decision to allow Football Club a top-flight stay of execution.
