More than 400 people were detained during high school protests in France

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez made statements regarding yesterday's protests, which concentrated around the capital Paris, in the broadcast he attended on BFMTV.

Reacting to the violent incidents that occurred during the siege actions of high schools, especially in the Ile-de-France region, where Paris is located, Nunez argued that the police intervention in these actions was "proportionate".

Nunez announced that more than 400 people, mostly young people under the age of 18, were detained during the protests.

Stating that the detentions were for activists who caused material damage and attempted vandalism and that 48 police officers were injured in the incidents, Nunez did not provide information on how many students were injured.

The French Ministry of Education announced that 338 schools were affected by yesterday's actions, and that there were siege attempts in 46 of them.

While high school students in France have been protesting for about 10 days demanding improvement of educational conditions, the protests around the capital Paris, especially in the cities of Lille, Saint-Denis, Rennes and Venissieux, intensified yesterday.

During the protests, garbage was set on fire in some school districts, and there were occasional scuffles between security forces and activists.
