g1 details the functions of each of the five positions that will be up for grabs in this year's election.

Governors are elected for four-year terms and can seek re-election only once per term. In other words, each governor can hold the position for up to eight years.

The governor is responsible for representing the state in relations with the federal government, other states and public institutions, in addition to appointing and dismissing secretaries of State and directors of state administration bodies.

Another responsibility is to prepare the state's financial planning. The governor sends the Multi-Year Plan (PPA), the Budget Guidelines Law (LDO) and the Annual Budget Law (LOA) to the Legislative Assembly, which define the government's priorities and investments.

The head of the state Executive is also responsible for implementing public policies in areas such as health, education, transport, housing, environment, social assistance and economic development.

He is the one who commands the Military, Civil and Scientific Police, in addition to the Fire Department, and manages the state prison system. It must also account for the application of public resources to the Court of Auditors and the population.

Although not a state, the Federal District also elects a governor. This happens because the DF is a unit of the Federation with its own organization and is not divided into municipalities.

For this reason, Brasília does not have a mayor or City Council. The duties that, in the rest of the country, are divided between governor and mayor are concentrated on the governor of the Federal District.
