The GDDR7 VRAM capacity increase is preparing to bring about a significant change in the graphics card world in the coming years. The latest information from the industry shows that memory manufacturers may launch new chips with 4 GB and 6 GB capacities in 2027 or 2028.
The majority of GDDR7 chips used in current graphics cards create a standard structure by offering 2 GB capacity per chip. These next-generation solutions will allow the total amount of VRAM to be significantly increased without requiring any changes to the memory bus width.
Next Generation Memory Technology
Leaks shared by Golden Pig Upgrade reveal that memory manufacturers are preparing GDDR7 chips with 4 GB and 6 GB capacity. There is no official product announcement regarding these capacities from Samsung, SK hynix or Micron yet.
Increasing the capacity to 4 GB makes it possible to double the total amount of VRAM by using the same number of memory chips. 6 GB capacity chips promise a significant leap forward by offering three times more capacity per chip compared to existing 2 GB solutions.
For example, a design in the GeForce RTX 5060 class, which has a 128-bit memory bus and offers 8 GB VRAM with four 2 GB chips, can reach 16 GB capacity with 4 GB chips. When 6 GB chips are used on the same 128-bit data bus, a theoretical 24 GB VRAM capacity becomes possible.
Of course, in order for these capacity increases to occur, the memory controller on the GPU and the card design must support the relevant chips. This development on the GDDR7 side has actually already started with 3 GB capacity chips.
SK hynix exhibited both 2 GB and 3 GB GDDR7 products in 2026, showing that this technology is no longer just in leaks. The company's 3 GB capacity solution finds its place in the product portfolio designed especially for graphics workloads.
Balance of Cost and Performance
It has been on the agenda for a long time that NVIDIA will switch to 3 GB GDDR7 chips in the GeForce RTX 50 SUPER series. This structure allows the use of higher VRAM capacities in current models without changing the memory bus.
The release schedule of the RTX 50 SUPER family is not yet clear due to the impact of memory prices. It is claimed that the 9 GB GeForce RTX 5050 model with a 96-bit bus and three 3 GB chips, which was previously on the agenda, has been canceled or postponed.
