Global data center move from Alibaba: Cloud region will be established in Türkiye too

Chinese e-commerce and technology giant Alibaba, which also owns 86.5 percent of Trendyol, announced plans to expand its data centers overseas, targeting markets in Europe and the Middle East. In this context, Türkiye is among the "first cloud regions" to be established within 12 months.

In the statement made today by Hangzhou-based Alibaba company, it will establish "first cloud regions" in Türkiye, Finland and the Netherlands within the next 12 months; It also announced that it will expand its data center footprints in Malaysia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, France and Hong Kong.

WHAT IS “ALIBABA CLOUD ZONE”?

“Alibaba cloud regions” refer to the physical geographic areas where Alibaba Cloud locates its data centers around the world. Each “region” consists of multiple independent data centers connected to each other by high-speed networks. For example; Alibaba Cloud has “territories” in Germany, Singapore, or China, and the companies store and process their data in these physical locations.

THE STATEMENT CAME AT A CRITICAL TIME

There is fierce competition between China and the USA in leading sectors such as robotics, semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Alibaba's new statement came before the critical meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in Washington, where many issues, including trade tensions, are expected to be on the agenda.

Alibaba, which also owns the Qwen model, which is among the most downloaded artificial intelligence models in the world, is one of the pioneers of China's artificial intelligence industry.

Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu stated yesterday that Alibaba aims to have a global data center capacity of over 20 gigawatts by 2032.

Eddie Wu said that the company plans to train an artificial intelligence model with 5 to 10 trillion parameters, which will be several times larger than the current largest Chinese model.
