Moments after Ollie Dempsey had a nightmare moment in the goalsquare, contriving to miss a simple chance, the Cats turn it over inside 50 and find the goal anyway. Humphries intercept, Neale handball, Mannagh goal. Cats up by four.

The second half is underway

Harry Dean is out there, which is great news for the Blues.

Carlton lead by three points as the third quarter gets underway. It's going to be a crucial one.

We are still waiting for official confirmation... although he is currently on the field going through some warm-up runs with the team before the start of the third quarter.

It looks like he will probably be OK to continue. The Blues certainly need him.

Three consecutive goals in that second quarter have pulled the game right back for Geelong, who were second best for long stretches of the opening half. But that's where experience tells, because the Cats didn't panic.

They made some adjustments with the way they went forward, stepped up around the clearances and did a better job of closing down the Carlton kick-mark ball movement.

A lot of the key stats really leveled up in that second term. The Blues will not be concerned, they are going to continue to throw everything at this, come what may. But we've got a game on our hands now.

Max Holmes pulls the cats within three points!

Really hard running from Holmes from the far wing, which was rewarded by a clever Dangerfield kick into his path.

Hasn't been a busy return for Holmes so far, but that is a big goal for the Cats. On the stroke of half-time, they are all the way back in this game.

Brad Close makes it two in a row for the cats

That's more like it for Geelong. A repeat entry from a Stewart intercept it was, Wiltshire spotting up the lead of Close with a nice kick inside 50. First time they haven't just bombed it on Neale's head.

Again, this is happening with Harry Dean off. The margin is eight points with nine minutes to play in the second quarter.

Gryan Miers pulls one back for the cats

The Carlton defence does look a little light on without Dean out there, and this time a long ball inside 50 was well brought to ground by Dangerfield. The crumbers went to work and and Miers finished the job with a tidy snap.

The Cats just need to stay close. For now they are achieving that.

Ollie Hollands extends the carlton lead

Frankie Evans is playing some sort of game. His kicking inside 50 has been spectacular, and that piercing pass to Hollands was the best of the lot.

Carlton get the first of the second, the lead is 21 points and they are looking comfortably the better team. This is powerful stuff from the Blues.

Still no goals in the second quarter

We've got 13 minutes to play in the term, but the rain and the pressure is making for a scrappy affair.

The Blues have missed a couple of chances, but it's been a heavily contested term so far. First goal here will feel pivotal.

Concussion concerns for harry dean

The young Carlton defender attempted mark of the century on the wing there, but seems to have smashed his head on something on the way down. He's bleeding heavily out of his nose and looks wobbly on his feet.

No doubt a HIA is on its way. Would be a huge loss if it's serious.

Carlton leads the tackle count 19-7, the overall disposal count 96-65 and the clearance count 11-4. They're winning more of the ball, supplying far more pressure and winning it at the coalface.

It's everything Josh Fraser will have wanted to see. If anything the margin flatters the Cats, who have looked a step off the pace so far. Room for improvement for Geelong, but it feels like something is brewing with this Carlton side.

Moments ago it looked like the Cats were going to get away with a really poor first term. Not now.

Carlton's clearance domination earns them another shot on goal straight from the centre bounce, with Lord found inside 50 directly in front.

Patrick Cripps with a stunner! A brilliant captain's goal!

We probably won't see a better goal than that one tonight! Patty Cripps, stuck deep in the pocket and handed a rushed handball from Sam Walsh, has let rip with a checkside from the boundary line that has split the middle post-high.

The Blues are still riding the good feelings, and when Cripps is pulling those off, anything is possible.

Patrick Dangerfield! He finds geelong's first

Thought he's looked a step slow so far tonight, but not that time. Danger found a pocket of space out the back of a forward 50 stoppage and snapped a ripper off a step.

The Cats needed that so badly. Incredibly, they only trail by four points.

How's he missed that one? After a strong mark 20 from goal, somehow Neale has slid his kick wide to the right. The wait for for the first Geelong goal goes on.

Matt Cottrell slots another for the blues

Best passage of kick-mark footy of the game so far from the Blues. Really clever stuff from full-back to inside 50, all the way to Cottrell who slots the Blues' second.

They are playing without fear, Carlton, that much is clearly evident. They're dominating the clearances and are using the ball brilliantly at the moment.

Frankie Evans kicks the first goal for the blues

Outstanding tackling pressure from Evans there, having two pops at Mannagh and nailing him with the second one to win the holding the ball free.

From 45 out, Evans made no mistake. First blood Carlton.

Shocking miss from blake acres

Acres won the free kick about 25 out, directly in front, but badly shanked the set shot. Blues are settling well here, biting off aggressive targets and now actually sticking some.

Just need to hit the scoreboard with it.
