Google在2024年推出Gem，讓用戶依照需求設定專屬指令與資料，打造個人化的Gemini AI助手。至於「技能」，概念上跟Gem相近，但更強調把常用的指令與工作方式保存下來，之後遇到特定任務時就能直接套用，例如，若經常用Gemini整理會議內容，可先建立「會議摘要」技能，設定整理重點、待辦事項等指令，之後遇到類似任務時，就能直接套用這項技能，不必每次重新輸入相同指令。

不過，Gem準備退場，仍有一些細節需要Google進一步說明。現階段Gem對所有Gemini用戶開放，包括免費用戶；但「技能」僅能在Gemini Spark中使用，需要訂閱Google AI Pro或AI Ultra方案，因此轉換之後，免費用戶能否繼續使用仍不清楚。此外，Gemini Spark在部分國家也尚未上線。
