Transition from Google Assistant to Gemini Completed: Return to Old Assistant Removed

With the transition to Google Assistant Gemini, Gemini is now the default assistant on Android devices. The option to revert to the old assistant has been removed.

Google has begun to widely roll out its long-planned Google Assistant Gemini transition for mobile devices. This change, which started from the beginning of September, completely transforms users' digital assistant experience.

This transition schedule, which was previously planned for 2025 and 2026, accelerated with the announcement made by Google at the beginning of August. According to current user reports, this transition has been activated on devices across the United States and Europe.

Assistant Option Completely Removed

With the latest updates to the Gemini application, the settings that allow users to return to the old assistant have also been disabled. In the Google app 17.60 stable version and 17.62 beta, the Switch to Google Assistant shortcut at the bottom of the account menu no longer appears.

With this change, users have lost the ability to use or return to Google Assistant on their phones, tablets or paired devices. The restriction also includes devices with the Wear OS operating system, headphones and the Android Auto platform.

Gemini has now become the default voice assistant experience on Android devices, activated by long-pressing the power button or swiping from the screen corners. Google seems to have completely closed the door to returning to the old assistant interface in order to strengthen the place of this new structure on mobile devices.

The Situation Has Not Changed in Smart Home Devices

Despite the removal of Google Assistant from mobile devices, no changes have yet been announced for devices in the home ecosystem. Google Nest and Google Home smart speakers, displays, and other Assistant-supported devices continue to maintain their current working patterns.

The company has not yet shared any new information about any transition process or Gemini integration for these devices. Users can continue to use the smart speakers and screens in their homes as before.

This major transformation in the Android ecosystem clearly reveals that Google centers Gemini in its mobile strategy. Users can now only interact with Gemini on their mobile devices, and some features offered by the old assistant have been integrated into this new structure.
