Consumer Affairs Agency announces fire accident caused by Google "Pixel 6a" and Anker mobile battery

The Consumer Affairs Agency announced on September 4th that there was a fire accident caused by Google's smartphone "Pixel 6a" (GA03714-JP). The accident falls under the category of serious product accidents based on the Consumer Product Safety Act, and is suspected to have been caused by the product.

The accident occurred on June 29, 2025 in Osaka Prefecture. While charging the device by connecting it to a third-party USB cable and AC adapter, a fire broke out, causing an abnormal noise and burning out the device and its surroundings, resulting in one person suffering minor injuries from burns. As a result of the investigation, it is presumed that the internal lithium-ion battery cells overheated abnormally and caused the fire, but the battery cells were severely burnt out and the cause of the abnormal heating could not be determined.

The accident itself had been made public as of July 2025, but it had not been determined whether it was caused by the product or not. After further investigation, the accident was reclassified as one suspected to be caused by the product.

On the same day, the Consumer Affairs Agency also announced a fire in the mobile battery "Anker PowerCore 10000" imported by Anker Japan as a special item. On June 11, 2016, a fire broke out at a lodging facility in Nagano Prefecture, destroying the charging product and the surrounding area. The cause is under investigation.

Anker Japan has been recalling and replacing the Anker PowerCore 10000 since October 21, 2025, due to the possibility that foreign matter may have been mixed in at a certain time during the manufacturing process of a supplier to which the company outsources cell manufacturing. There is a risk that a short circuit may occur inside the battery cell as a result of use, leading to a fire. A total of 410,124 vehicles were targeted. It is currently unknown whether this accident was caused by this recall event.
