Combining domestic technology, human resources, and research infrastructure, laying the foundation for industrialization of marine nuclear power
(Ulsan = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Geun-ju = HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will join hands with the domestic shipbuilding and nuclear power industries and academia to demonstrate and industrialize marine SMR (small modular reactor) technology.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced on the 7th that it recently held a launch ceremony for the 'SMR Marine Technology Demonstration Center' at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) together with major domestic shipbuilding and nuclear power institutions.
Twelve institutions, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, Korea Electric Power Engineering & Construction, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Korea Register, Hyundai Heavy Industries Turbomachinery, Clad Korea, Ulsan Techno Park, Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Hanyang University, participated in this demonstration center.
The 'SMR Marine Technology Demonstration Center' serves as a base for jointly promoting marine SMR technology development, testing, verification, and verification by linking the technology, professional manpower, and research facilities of participating organizations and establishing the foundation for industrialization.
Participating institutions plan to jointly utilize their existing testing facilities and research infrastructure to reduce duplicate investments and increase the efficiency of technology verification.
In addition, we will jointly develop core technologies necessary for marine SMR application by linking industrial technology demand and university research capabilities, and jointly discover and plan large-scale national projects and government research and development tasks.
Through this, we plan to build a foundation for cooperation that extends from marine SMR technology development to verification and future commercialization by combining the design and construction capabilities of the domestic shipbuilding industry, nuclear technology, and university research capabilities.
Officials from participating organizations, including Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Korea Electric Power Engineering & Construction, expect that this will serve as an opportunity to advance the commercialization of domestic marine SMR.
Won Gwang-sik, head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Marine Energy Business Division, said, "The SMR Marine Technology Demonstration Center will become a cooperation base that effectively connects technology and research infrastructure in the domestic shipbuilding and nuclear power fields. We will build the industrialization foundation step by step with participating organizations."

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) predicted that U.S. electricity consumption will hit a record high of 4.288 trillion kWh and 4.356 trillion kWh this year and next year, respectively, due to increased demand for AI data centers. Commercial sales are expected to grow at twice the rate of residential sales, and wholesale power prices are expected to vary dramatically by region.

Google signed a 3.6GW power purchase agreement (PPA) with Constellation, the largest nuclear power plant company in the U.S., to meet the increasing power demand for AI data centers. This contract is consistent with the White House's ratepayer protection pledge and is carried out in a manner that does not pass on costs to regular customers. The two companies have also signed a technology partnership and plan to apply Google Cloud and AI 'Gemini Enterprise' to Constellation's power plant operations.

On the 6th, international oil prices closed on a strong note, keeping an eye on the increase in Middle East crude oil exports and the impact of the G7's agreement to release oil reserves. Brent crude oil ended trading at $100.58 per barrel, up 0.26%, and WTI ended trading at $89.44, up 0.01%. Saudi oil pipeline transportation is stable, but concerns remain about supply disruptions due to continued military tensions due to attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels.

The seven key OPEC+ countries reached an agreement in principle to maintain their oil production target for November at the current level, considering production disruptions and uncertainties caused by the Middle East conflict. Actual production remains well below pre-war levels.

North Chungcheong Province and Cheongju City will invest 40 billion won by 2029 to create Cheongju as a hydrogen city. Following the selection of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's public contest, hydrogen production and shipping facilities and charging stations will be expanded, and the supply of garbage trucks and buses will be promoted in stages.

The EU energy chief warned that the EU faces a crisis due to a surge in energy prices in the aftermath of the war with Iran, and urged member states to consider measures to suppress demand, such as temperature limits in public buildings, ahead of winter.
