Steam came into play after the Ataturk image crisis in Hearts of Iron IV

The crisis that broke out between Turkish players and the company in Paradox Interactive's strategy game Hearts of Iron IV has reached a new dimension. Valve stepped in after the reactions started with the sanctions imposed on a Turkish player who used a photo of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on the official Discord server and turned into a boycott on Steam. Steam exempted thousands of negative reviews of the game from its overall review score by flagging them as “off-topic review activity.”

Hearts of Iron IV's review score, which declined rapidly on the Steam store following community reactions, rose again to the "Very Positive" level with Valve's intervention. The review protection algorithm developed by the platform detects collective reactions that develop over a certain period of time, regardless of the technical or gameplay dynamics of the game, and prevents them from being reflected in the overall score.

This action does not mean that user comments are completely deleted from the store page. Detailed criticisms and reactions written by the players can be read on the relevant page; but it cannot bring down the overall average score of the game.

As a matter of fact, there continue to be many reaction messages directly referring to the Atatürk debate in the current comments tab of the platform.

The crisis was triggered when a Turkish player who chose the photo of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as his profile picture on the game's official Discord channel was warned and punished. Although the moderation team initially put forward server rules regarding images of real historical figures, the attitude displayed during the objection phase escalated the tension.

The moderators' unfair association of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk with the events of 1915 and his classification as a "controversial figure" drew a harsh reaction from Turkish players. Equating Atatürk with polarizing figures such as Karl Marx in the statements brought the anger in the community to its peak.

As the reactions snowballed, Hearts of Iron IV Game Director Laszlo “Batya” Pieper shared an official announcement. Pieper stated that the company does not aim to pass judgment on any historical figure, and that they will re-evaluate this policy, acknowledging that the profile rules are applied inconsistently.

After the game director's first softening step, there was no new official statement from Paradox Interactive regarding the score reset on Steam. Although Steam's activation of the review bombing filter seems to have technically saved the score, it has not completely calmed the unrest in the player community.

All eyes are now on how Paradox will update its community rules and whether it will take any additional steps regarding the attitude of its moderation team.

This process, which once again proves how quickly player reflexes can be organized in the digital game world, clearly shows that developers and publishers need to reconsider their community management strategies.
