The first services were intended for patients who were already being monitored at the hospital itself, with consultations, exams and prenatal care. Among the criteria considered are high-risk pregnancy, maternal age over 40 years and presence of comorbidities.
During a visit to the unit this Wednesday (30), the Minister of Health, Alexandre Padilha, highlighted the structure available to care for pregnant women who need specialized care.
“It represents a dream being realized,” stated the minister. According to Padilha, the structure brings together modern equipment, ICU beds, a surgical block and spaces dedicated to humanized care.
The minister also highlighted the importance of the unit for the Amazon region, especially in caring for more complex pregnancies.
"We can reduce diseases during pregnancy, the risk of maternal mortality. We saw here pregnant women, first pregnant women, natural birth, cesarean birth, cesarean section being done well when the cesarean section is supposed to be done, normal birth when it is supposed to be a natural birth, saving lives", he said.
Reference for the Lower Amazon
According to the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense of Pará, Ualame Machado, the intention is for the hospital to receive patients from Santarém and other municipalities in Lower Amazonas who require specialized care.
The regulation will be used to mainly forward highly complex cases, while municipalities remain responsible for habitual risk births.
“So that we can take this pressure off the municipalities and provide quality care for high-risk births, so that the municipalities can continue to carry out normal-risk births and that we can provide this specialized support”, he explained.
The unit already has ICU beds and a surgical block in operation. The structure also provides pediatric care, with a wing that should be delivered later.

Ualame also explained that, in emergency situations, the unit can receive patients even if they are not previously regulated. He cited cases classified as “zero vacancy”, when there is risk and immediate need for care.
Despite this, the guidance is that the hospital maintains its focus on more complex cases.
“In a case of emergency, a risk situation, obviously, we respond, but there are rules, there is a selection of this public so that we can best serve each person,” he stated.

The Regional Maternal and Child Hospital of Santarém has 120 beds and is dedicated to specialized maternal and child care. The unit is part of the expansion of the provision of health services in western Pará.
The structure includes care for high-risk pregnant women, a surgical center and intensive care beds. The expectation is that the unit will also contribute to reducing the need for patients who need specialized care to travel to other regions.
During the agenda in Santarém, minister Alexandre Padilha also visited UBS Ipanema/Cambuquira, one of the three units in the municipality covered by the New PAC.
